BENEFITS, PAYROLL, SCHEDULING PLATFORM

THE DETAILS.

Spur is an HCM and Payroll platform focused on improving the lives of hourly workers.

We designed and supported an extensive scheduling, time and attendance, payroll, and benefits platform that supported 100+ customers with over 50,000+ workers and ran payroll in excess of $60,000,000.

This page will focus primarily on the Paid Leave management feature we created that shared functionality between the mobile and desktop apps.

Cross Functional Partners.

For this project we worked closely internally with a combination of Product Owners, Engineers, and the Support Team.

We also collaborated with and interviewed customers to determine the best ways of working.

END RESULT.

The end result was a clean interface that allowed workers and managers to communicate paid leave requests and make adjustments to those requests as needed. We successfully provided our customers the ability to reliable make those leave requests and brought clarity to a chaotic process.

PAIN POINTS.

The primary pain point here was simple. Our software hadn’t yet implemented any way for managers or workers to manage their paid time off. Workers were having to verbally request time off with managers. This often resulted in forgotten requests and miscommunication. We knew we needed a concrete, easy way for workers to request time off and an equally easy way for managers to approve or edit that request.

CONCEPT AN MVP.

The concept we created broke the experience between the two primary personas.

On the mobile app we gave workers the ability to request paid leave by selecting their dates and the type of leave they intended to take. Types of leave vary from company to company but generally fall along the lines of Paid Time Off, Bereavement, and Sick Leave.

On the desktop app we gave managers the ability to approve, reject, or modify a request from a worker. We also built in the ability to submit a time-off request on behalf of a worker in the event that an individual needs assistance.

WHAT WE LEARNED.

Results.

Our team successfully delivered value to our customers by bridging the gap between workers and managers. We empowered them to accurately and efficiently manage their time off providing greater autonomy to both workers and managers.

Next Steps.

Prior to Spur closing its doors in late 2020 we had planned to use analytics to further modify this flow and improve on the design to make the experience as frictionless as possible.
